Supreme Court rules grandparents and relatives, but not refugees, exempt from Trump's travel ban

SPREAD THE WORD:

Supreme Court has upheld Trump's overall refugee ban, but declared grandparents and relatives exempt

The U.S. Supreme Court has overruled parts of President Donald Trump's executive order that bars entry from six countries to the United States. While the majority of the so called 'travel ban' was upheld by the Supreme Court Wednesday, the controversial part that prohibited entry from grandparents and relatives of American citizens has been thrown out.

The decision was part of a lower court opinion that temporarily exempts grandparents and relatives from the President's travel ban, a small loss for the Trump administration.

However, the justices did give Trump a partial win by lifting an order exempting refugees from the travel ban. Meaning as of now, refugees with no connection to American families will be barred from entering the United States under the new and revised order.

Fact check: Much of the mainstream media is claiming today's Supreme Court decision is a "devastating loss" for the Trump administration. That couldn't be farther from the truth - technically speaking, refugees will no longer be allowed to travel to the United States, which was the ultimate goal in Trump's executive order to "secure America's borders", as the President says. Now, only family members (grandparents and relatives), meaning refugees will be barred from entering the United States.

The six countries affected by Trump's travel ban are Iran, Syria, Libya, Yemen and Somalia. The original executive order included Iraq on the list of banned countries, but was removed last month to appease court orders.

Despite the large success for the Trump administration today from the Supreme Court, many people against the order voiced their protest for it. The court suggested that the 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals should review this issue.

The Supreme Court will hear the overall challenges to the travel ban later this year.

Some government officials spoke out against the specifications of Trump's travel ban that barred entry for grandparents and relatives. Neal Katyal, the Hawaii lawyer who challenged the ban, said the limits were unfair.

"Compelling a grandparent to be apart from his grandchild -- especially one seeking refuge from violence or persecution -- inflicts hardship of unbearable severity," he wrote.
