A Facebook post that called first lady Michelle Obama an "ape in heels" has caused outrage across the nation, after a local non-profit leader and town Mayor joked on the social media website.

Pamela Ramsey Taylor runs a local non-profit group in Clay County, and made headlines when her Facebook post when viral referring to Michelle Obama as an "ape". "It will be refreshing to have a classy, beautiful, dignified first lady in the White House. I'm tired of seeing a Ape in heels," she said.

Things took a turn for the worst, when local town mayor Beverly Whaling commented, saying, "just made my day Pam". Despite Clay's small population, of just 491, the Facebook post quickly went viral, spurring backlash for Taylor and Mayor Whaling. According to the towns census, Clay County has a residence of 9,000 that has no African American population, and is 98% white.

After her post went viral, Taylor said she knew her post could be "interpreted as racist, but in no way was intended to be." Saying that she was expressing her opinion on Michelle Obama's attractiveness, not the color of her skin.

Among the outrage, a petition was created calling for the termination of both Taylor and Whaling from their positions. The petition gathered over 128,000+ signatures in just a day, and the next day Taylor had been removed from her position in her non-profit. Mayor Beverly Whaling has not been terminated, however, still remains under extreme fire for her comment on the Facebook post.

Mayor Whaling issued a statement to the Washington Post shortly after the controversial post went viral, saying: "My comment was not intended to be racist at all" and apologized for her comment "getting out of hand."
"I was referring to my day being made for change in the White House! I am truly sorry for any hard feeling this may have caused! Those who know me know that I'm not of any way racist!" she said.
West Virginia Democratic Party Chairwoman Belinda Biafore offered her "sincerest apologies" to Michelle Obama and the Obama family, on behalf of what she called "my fellow Mountaineers", in reference to the states nickname.
"West Virginia truly is better than this. These radical, hateful, and racist ideals are exactly what we at the West Virginia Democratic Party will continue to fight against," Biafore state in a statement.
Melanie Martinez, wife of President elect Donald Trump, sits down with first lady Michelle Obama in the Trump's first official meeting with the Obama's following the election on November 8th.

Owens Brown of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People West Virginia chapter criticized the post and comment, saying, it is "unfortunate that people still have these racist undertones".

"Unfortunately, this is a reality that we are dealing with in America today. There's no place for these types of attitudes in our state." Brown said.
The Facebook pages of both women have been deactivated as of Monday. The case strikes a familiar cord within the Republican party, where just last week in Kentucky, Republican Dan Johnson referred to Barack and Michelle Obama as "monkeys". During the controversy, Republicans and House Speaker Jeff Hoover called for Johnson to drop out of the race, but after beating Democrat Linda Belcher in Bullit County, Hoover said Johnson would be "welcome in our caucus".
